Sustainable
If we can't find out where our fish is from, or how and when it was caught, we won't sell it! How do you know the fish you’re buying was harvested in a way that reflects a respect for Mother Nature? There is a lot to think about. Wild fish, for example, must be caught using gear that helps prevent by-catch, over-fishing, and habitat damage. For farmed fish (yes, there are some very well-managed farms), the feed used must be sustainable and attention must be paid to the effect on the environment (including such matters as waste, escapees, and disease). We consult many organizations that monitor and regularly report on fishery conditions. One such body is the well-recognized Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch, with whom we partner. Other groups we use include the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), NOAA Fisheries, and The Fair Trade Capture Fisheries Standard, to name a few.
