Its name comes from the Italian word “cavare,” meaning “to hollow out” or “to carve.” The shape’s design, with its grooves and hollow center, makes it ideal for capturing sauces because the ridges cling to thick textures, while the hollow center traps smaller ingredients like meat or vegetables.
